Sangram ’13 – 15th to 17th November

After breaking sweat and shouting war cries over three days, IIMK this year with a glint of dignity and a splendid show had to give away the trophy to the winners of Sangram’13, IIMB. With a glorious turnaround where last year IIMK won 7 gold medals against IIMB’s 14 to this year’s 9 vs. IIMB’s 10, IIMK seems to have been the biggest winner after IIMT which also managed to bag 2 golds. Already evident in the K-air is a steely resolve to reclaim the oh-so-closely lost glory with students being heard planning for the next year’s Sangram in night canteens and hostel landings. S1 The three day sports war between the B-school giants:  IIMK, IIMB and IIMT saw unmatched intensity and spirit of student community with people cheering & jeering to shaking hands & even hugging their rivals. Extending over myriad sport activities like volleyball, throw ball, football, cricket, tennis, table tennis, chess etc along with last year’s additions of Hockey and Kho Kho, the whole event gave a chance to the sports freaks to stretch their muscles and flaunt their flair. With the end of mid-terms, Sangram was served as a feast for the tired and exhausted IIMK crowd that relished the carnival in full vigor. With clean sweeps in carrom, chess, swimming and football, the medal tally already had brought IIMK far ahead of IIMT and neck to neck with IIMB. However it maybe was just IIMK’s bad day that saw marginal defeats in men’s basketball and Pool that turned the medals tally in IIMB’s favor.

All in all, IIMK left a mighty impression and significant intimidation in the eyes of all. With the grounds in top shape, to excellent mess food facility, decent accommodation for almost 300 extra students and lush green and refreshing campus- IIMK has lived up to its brand value. The new girl boy ratio seems to have improved the skills as well as the spirit of the IIMK’s sports community with girls and boys flocking the ground perimeters in equal numbers to support their alma mater in their shrillest voices. The culmination of the event was even more magnificent with Redbull’s tour bus approaching IIMK’s grounds just after the closing ceremony giving the players another reason to groove and celebrate. Hoping for IIMK to push the boundaries and emerge numero uno in Sangram’14 that will be taken over by IIMB.

When the media cell interviewed some of the players from the three participating institutes, we found that though competition was primary among them, their sportsman spirits far outweighed any rivalry of sorts. With Kho-Kho, Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton and a variety of other sports, participants  agreed that the level of competition had risen, and so had their expectations. In comparison to Sangram 2012, they found the inter-IIM sports war this year to be well scheduled, and praised the Sportscom at IIM Kozhikode for its efficiency. As this festival goes off the checklist, the three institutes now await Sangram 2014!

IIM-Kozhikode to host Sangram-the inter-IIM War for sporting glory!

1394046_709139102430958_710582854_nSangram, a veritable war of the elite sports teams from three premier business schools in Southern India – the Indian Institutes of Management at Kozhikode, Bangalore and Trichy. SANGRAM’13 will be its 10th edition and IIM Kozhikode will play host to the event in 2013.

Since its inception in the year 2004, the intensity of Sangram has been unmatched, and the euphoria unparalleled. Traditionally, each campus plays host every alternate year and gives an opportunity to students from the other campus to establish their superiority. In last year’s sports extravaganza there was the added thrill because of the fact that to add to all the excitement of the much awaited sports encounters between IIM Kozhikode and IIM Bangalore, we also had IIM Trichy as the third competitor in the battle of sporting supremacy among the IIMs of the South !!

The sports teams of IIMK this year will play in their backyard and would be supported by the students IIMK and NIT Calicut (sports partner IIMK).With the pride and honor of IIM K’s alma maters at stake, the captains and players are going through a rigorous training schedule, all the while balancing it with their highly demanding academic schedules.

Inter-IIM meets are unique in the aspect that they provide students a chance to interact, compete with other IIMs and build strong networking relations via Sports. Sporting rivalries often turn out to be the benefactors of lifelong friendships by bringing in passionate, energetic and highly motivated people who think alike on the same page. That’s the beauty of SANGRAM !!

Clichéd as it might sound; but last year’s SANGRAM witnessed most of the matches that went to the wire with each IIM having their moments of victory. However, it was the tenacity and athletic supremacy of the teams of IIM Kozhikode which helped IIMK beat IIMB in around 7 sports clinching a 2nd place in the tournament.

In this year’s edition of Sangram for three full days, the IIMK’s sports contingent is brimming with energy and is eager to prove their mettle. The challenge for IIM Bangalore to defend its status of champions doesn’t look like an easy job.

The battle has begun, clearly bigger challenges lie ahead as the team and institute prepares itself for upcoming Sangram-2013 to make it bigger, better and exciting.

GO IIMK … Win It !!

Chakravyuh’13

Untitled

There was buzz downhill for three days, people rushed up and down the hill more than usual, students got a chance to teach their Gurus and Gurus got a chance to show their other side. Yes, we are talking about Chakravyuh’2013, an event organized by Sportscom, where the students from PGP 16, PGP 17, Forex and the Faculty and Staff teams battled it out to establish their supremacy.

The primary idea behind Chakravyuh was to get the best out of the students enthusiastic about sports and also involve our Faculty and Staff members. Our Forex students have always participated in Kozhikode Football League and this was just the platform they needed to play some competitive football upfront as well as other outdoor sports. They did not disappoint anyone. The event hosted three outdoor games: Basketball, Volleyball and Football

The tournament began with the inaugural Volleyball match between PGP 16 and PGP 17. A well fought contest which was won by PGP-16. The first match of football between Forex and PGP 17 ended up as a one sided affair, where Forex thrashed PGP 17 with their perfect blend of skills and support from fellow Forex students, especially the girls who were roaring and cheering “Go Forex Go !”.

The next day witnessed some brilliant display of skills by Faculty and Staff teams in Basketball as well as Volleyball. Unfortunately, they ended up second best. They lost to PGP 17 in Basketball while to Forex in Volleyball. But the fight and the hunger they displayed was applauded by everyone present.

The third day marked the dominance of PGP 16. Brilliant play was put up by both the teams of Forex and Faculty+staff in Basketball and Football respectively. Both the teams fought rigorously but luck was not on their side and PGP 16 went on to steal the show.

The Basketball final was played between PGP 16 and PGP 17 in the presence of PGP chairperson Prof. C. Raju who was there to support the students. Though PGP 17 attacked and defended brilliantly and was fighting neck to neck but it was PGP 16 with their experienced unit and fine displays of skills which was able to emerge victorious.

The Volleyball final was between PGP 16 and Forex. The players of PGP 16 were too hot to be handled by the Forex team in the first set. While Forex team bounced back in the second set, the last set was completely dominated by PGP 16 and they won the match 25-13, 22-25, 25-14.

The much awaited Football final was also between PGP 16 and Forex. The occasion for the grand finale was set and a good audience had gathered to watch the teams fight it out in the arena. The Forex team was craving for revenge for the loss in Volleyball final. As usual their team was supported by a good number of FOREX students who were singing songs and shouting slogans. PGP-16 also had a good support of students of PGP-16 and PGP-17. It was fascinating to see faculties and alumni turning up to witness the mega event. The match had well built attacks from the Forex that was countered clinically by the strong defensive wall of PGP 16. The latter’s attacks were also very impressive. Quite unexpectedly PGP-16 proved too difficult to beat and ended up as winner with the score line reading 2-0.

After winning all the finals of Basketball, Volleyball and Football, PGP 16 was the undoubted winner of Chakravyuh 2013. Chakravyuh has set the stage for upcoming outpour of zeal and rivalries to be seen in KFL and Sangram. Yes, The Game is truly on!
