Flash Mob by IIMK students on the theme of ‘Organ Donation’

The crowd at Calicut Beach and Focus Mall were left enthralled by a surprise organized by the students of IIM Kozhikode in the run up to the fifth edition of the Calicut mini-marathon. Just as the sun was going down, a group of students from IIMK huddled together for a ‘Flash mob’ at the Calicut Beach and then went on to perform at the Focus Mall as well. A large crowd gathered to applaud and enjoy the enthusiasm and passion on display. The participants had put in days of hard work and were successfully rewarded with the crowd’s appreciation.


The event was a prelude to this year’s Calicut Mini-Marathon to be held on 23 February, 2014, Sunday in association with the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS), Govt. body under Kerala Health Department. The theme this year is ‘Gift a life- organ donation’. Keeping in mind the sordid transplant scenario in India, IIM-Kozhikode Calicut mini Marathon’14 endeavors to mitigate apprehension, dispel negative notions and promote organ donation.


Calicut Marathon 2014 launched

IIM Kozhikode will be organizing the Calicut mini-Marathon 2014 on the 23rd of February 2014 in association with the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS), Govt. body under Kerala Health Department and MOHAN Foundation. The event launch ceremony was held on 26th November 2013 and was graced by the presence of renowned Malayalam actor, director and singer Vineeth Srinivasan.


Vineeth heaped praise on the institute and the initiative and unveiled the logo for 2014. The Director, IIMK, Prof. Debashish Chatterjee declared the marathon open and encouraged students to participate in the organ donation drive.Dr. Soman Jacob, CEO, Baby Memorial Hospital spoke at length about the process of organ donation and launched the website Representatives from KNOS and the District Sports Council also attended the event.


This year the marathon is  espousing a less-discussed social cause. The theme is ‘Gift a life- organ donation’. Keeping in mind the sordid transplant scenario in India, Calicut mini Marathon’14 endeavors to mitigate apprehension, dispel negative notions and promote organ donation. The marathon features two categories, a 10 km mini-marathon which is a competitive race and a 3 km “Dream Run”, a non‐competitive run featuring people from all walks of life. Over the past four years, the marathon has been taking up a unique cause every year- having focused on critical issues of women empowerment, rights of differently-abled people and waste management in the past. 


Open day conducted as a buildup to Calicut Marathon

Reaffirming its commitment to achieve a greener and cleaner environment the Calicut mini Marathon Committee successfully conducted ‘Open day’ based on the theme ‘war on waste’ on 3rd February, 2012 from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm at the IIM Kozhikode Campus.

The 4th edition of Calicut mini marathon which will be held on 24th February 2013 aims to highlight issues in waste management such as environmental concerns, recycling and reduction of waste. The marathon is optimistic about spreading the message of a cleaner Calicut through its War on Waste Campaign. The Open day was organised as a part of lead up to the marathon. The event witnessed teeming students of Class VII to XII from schools in and around Calicut participating in elocution, quiz and poster-making competitions. The topics of the elocution were ‘War on Waste begins at home’ and ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ and the competitions were held in English and Malayalam. The students took this opportunity to express their innovative ideas that would help in addressing the contemporary issues in waste management. The students also shared their vision of a clean and green Calicut by painting a rosy picture of a zero waste community. The event met with success when students took a solemn pledge of endeavoring towards reducing waste in their everyday activities by following simple actions. They also got the opportunity of visiting the famed Business Museum at IIMK. The winners of the competitions will go on to win exciting prizes and will be felicitated on the day of the marathon along with an exhibition of the winning posters.

IIM Kozhikode conducts 3rd edition of Thantedam Calicut Mini-Marathon

IIMK conducts the 3rd edition of Thantedam Calicut Mini-Marathon on 26th February 2012. The event was conducted by IIM Kozhikode in association with Thantedam Gender Park and Kozhikode District Sports Council.

The Calicut mini-marathon, with its first two editions since 2010, has come to become an annual event, synonymous with Calicut, IIMK and social welfare. On 26th February 2012, Calicut city ran once again when IIM Kozhikode organized the third edition of Thantedam Calicut mini-Marathon 2012 in association with Thantedam Gender Park of Kozhikode, promoted by Shri. M.K. Muneer, Minister for Social Welfare and Panchayat, Govt. of Kerala and the Kerala Social Security Mission. With its theme “Empowering her future”, the third edition of mini-marathon aimed to highlight issues such as dowry, domestic violence, security, health and economic visibility faced by women in our society and promote empowerment of women.
Thantedam Calicut mini-Marathon 2012The proceeding started off early morning at Calicut Beach from 5:30AM with free registration of almost 6000+ participants. The event was attended by dignitaries such as Ms. Revathy (National award-winning actress and director), Shri. M.K. Muneer (Minister for Social Welfare and Panchayat, Govt. of Kerala), Dr. P.B. Salim IAS (District Collector, Kozhikode), Mr. Jishnu Raghavan (film actor), Ms. Jaya M.S. (Director, Social Welfare Department), Shri. Mohan Kumar (Special Officer, Thantedam Gender Park), Noorbina Rashid (General Convenor, Thantedam Gender Fest), Mr. T P Ashraf (Executive Director, Kerala Social Security Mission), Mr. Younus TK (Regional Director, Kerala Social Security Mission), Mr. K J Mathai (President, Kozhikode District Sports Council), Ms. P B Anitha (Secretary, Kozhikode District Sports Council), Shri G. Sparjan Kumar IPS (Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode) among others.

The 10-km men’s race was flagged off at 07:50AM by Actress Revathy, followed by the flag-off of 10-km women’s race by Actor Jishnu at 08:10AM. This was followed by Shri. M.K. Muneer flagging off the 3-km celebrity run which featured celebrities, citizens, women SHGs/NGOs like ICDS and Kudumbasree and college students showcasing their work on the theme ‘Empowering her future’ along the route.

The timing officials of Kozhikode District Sports Council confirmed the winners as under:
10-km men’s category-
1st place: Soji Mathew (Indian Railways)
2nd place: Anil G. Pawar (Ernakulam Navy)
3rd place: Raman Yadav (UP)
10-km women’s category-
1st place: Thara M.D. (Palakkad)
2nd place: Shoba V.V. (Palakkad)
3rd place: Danimol Thomas (Tsr Vimala)

In addition, consolation prizes were awarded to Top 4th to 20th positions in each of the race category, adding up to total prizes worth Rs.2.1 lakh.

Other awards presented during the presentation ceremony included the Best College trophy to NIT Calicut, Young woman achiever award to Fasna MP of Malabar Christian College and Netha Hussain of Kozhikode Medical College, Promising young woman award to Archana Karunan of NIT-C and Nimmi K of Vadavyasa Institute of Technology, Karad.

The ceremony wound up at 09:30AM with an address by Ms. Revathy and Shri M.K. Muneer.
Earlier, in the run-up to the marathon, IIM Kozhikode had organized a set of lead-up events such as ‘Young Woman Achiever award’, inter-school poster-making & elocution competition, local street-play at Calicut Beach, bike rally and Flash-mob at Focus Mall, Calicut.

The mini-marathon served as a precursor to the upcoming Thantedam Gender Park, a novel project envisaging a cultural centre that will offer women from various strata of society a slew of support systems and services such as library, juvenile home, health centre, legal assistance etc. all under one roof. The foundation stone for the Thantedam Gender Park will be laid at Vellimadukunnu in Kozhikode in March this year, followed by a week-long national-level gender festival with the theme “Celebrating Womanhood”. The gender festival will encompass a host of events for women such as sports and food festival, health camps, self-help group support workshops, documenting and sharing of stories of women’s struggle and success.”

The title sponsor for the Thantedam Calicut mini-marathon 2012 was the Thantedam Gender Park. The organizing partners were the Ministry of Social Welfare, Govt. of Kerala and Kozhikode District Sports Council.
