The term ‘Backwaters‘ no longer evokes images of the serene lagoons and sleepy houseboats of Kerala. What immediately comes to mind instead is a group of future management executives battling it out amongst themselves to emerge supreme. Backwaters is the annual B-school meet of IIMK where fun events are combined with many learning opportunities through eminent personalities who come, discuss and enlighten all with their experience and views. Backwaters has grown over the past years and now resounds as a familiar name across Industry and Academia.
Star attractions include White Knight (Business Plan), Avatar (Next Best CEO), Bizzathalon (Quiz) and Labyrinth (Online Treasure Hunt) among other theme specific events. In addition to these events there are business simulation games and case studies spanning six verticals (Finance, Marketing, Systems, Strategy, Operations and Human Resources) that amply provide opportunity to students to apply their classroom concepts to practical use.
Continuing the legacy, Backwaters’11 based on “People, Planet & Profit”, was the first of its kind 72 hour nonstop B-School fest with over 25 events with participation from close to 3500 students from over 70 premier B-Schools across India. Over Rs.10 lakhs was handed out in prize money. Events were held in association with NABARD,Teach For India, PETA and TiE. It achieved national level print media coverage through The Hindu, Indian Express and Deccan Chronicle.
The very first of its kind brand management event was organized in association with Chennai Superkings. White Knight, the flagship entrepreneurship event, saw a huge participation in the form of more than 180 B-Plan entries from over 60 B-schools and 20 start-ups across the country. The Great Debate was moderated by NDTV’s Ashutosh Sinha and Corporate Dinner attended by the local business community. Shiksha, a workshop for local undergraduate and postgraduate students, was organized to give them a perspective on Higher Education.
This year Backwaters will throw down the gauntlet to the next-gen MBAs with an enthralling plethora of events which shall test every aspect of Management. In the modern era of innovations and unconventional ideas, Backwaters ‘12 seeks to highlight this growing prominence through its new theme – ‘Ideate, Innovate and Integrate’. The birth of new ideas and innovations and finally integrating them into one is the order of the day with most companies following this path in order to sustain in these competitive times. With wider participation from a record number of colleges this year, prominent business personalities from diverse domains and an intense 3 days of no-holds-barred competition, Backwaters ‘12 is set to be the cynosure of all eyes.
